Every night, I get an email from historian Heather Cox Richardson, via her free Substack newsletter. It’s a lot to read, but her words are vital for understanding the political moment we’re in. I’d also recommend Timothy Snyder, another historian. He doesn’t post on Substack nearly as often, and his insights into authoritarianism are prescient. I find this to be a much less emotional way to stay informed. Social media headlines and TV news add a lot of hype and emotion, which is a distraction. They will entertain you, but it’s not helpful. My advice? Stay away from MSNBC and Fox News and online articles that use highly emotional verbs in the headline. If the headline says “slammed” or “destroyed” or “dominated” or any verb more appropriate to sports reporting, don’t click, and then remove that media outlet from your news feed. Find reputable news sources and kick the garbage to the curb.
