I bought my first car in 1995, and in 30 years (1995-2025), I’ve owned four cars. That’s an average of 7.5 years each. Keeping vehicle expenses to a minimum is a fun game to play, and I have ignored the social pressure to spend more (I’m looking at you, Elon).
Each month, I track my mileage, and over the last five years, I have averaged 8,887 miles a year. According to the US Dept. of Transportation, the average American drives 14,489 miles a year (as of 2022). For the past five years, I’ve been working from home, which helps keep my mileage low. My boss lives out West. So if I ever return to the office, I’m going to have a really long commute!
I drive Toyotas mostly. What do you drive?
